Best Time to Perform Umrah: Month-by-Month Guide

Key Takeaways

  • Umrah in Ramadan carries the reward of Hajj but is the busiest and costliest time.
  • November to February offers the most pleasant weather in Makkah and Madinah.
  • Summer months are hot but usually the most affordable.
  • Islamic months move about 11 days earlier every year.

Umrah can be performed almost any time of the year – but the experience changes a lot with the season. Here is how to choose the right time based on reward, weather, crowds and budget.

Umrah in Ramadan – The Most Rewarding

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward).” (Bukhari, Muslim). Iftar in the Haram, Taraweeh behind the Imams of Makkah and Madinah, and the last ten nights make it unforgettable. Expect very large crowds and the highest prices, especially in the last ten days. Read our Ramadan Umrah guide.

Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin around 8 February 2027.

The month of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth is a much-loved time to visit Madinah. Crowds from South Asia increase, but it is far less busy than Ramadan. In 2026 Rabi ul Awal fell in August–September; in 2027 it will be around early August.

Winter (November – February) – Best Weather

Daytime temperatures in Makkah are usually around 24–30°C and nights are cool. Madinah can feel cold at night in December and January – carry a jacket. December school holidays bring family crowds and higher prices.

Summer (June – September) – Best Value

Temperatures often cross 40–45°C, but the Haram is air-conditioned and the Mataf floor stays cool. Packages are usually more affordable and hotels less crowded. Perform rituals at night or early morning.

Islamic months move every year

The Hijri calendar is lunar, so Ramadan, Rabi ul Awal and other months come about 11 days earlier each year. A “winter Ramadan” today will become a “summer Ramadan” in around 10–15 years.

Our Recommendations

  • First-time pilgrims & elderly parents: November–February for comfortable weather.
  • Maximum reward: Ramadan – book 3–4 months ahead.
  • Budget-friendly: summer months or right after the Umrah season reopens.
  • Families with children: winter school holidays – book early.
