The Ultimate Umrah & Hajj Packing Checklist

Key Takeaways

  • Carry documents in a waterproof pouch and keep digital copies on your phone.
  • Men should pack two sets of Ihram; everyone needs unscented toiletries.
  • Comfortable, broken-in footwear is the single most important item.
  • Most airlines allow 1–2 litres of Zamzam on the return flight – check your package.

You will walk many kilometres a day, move between Makkah and Madinah, and spend long hours in the Haram. Packing smart makes a big difference to your comfort and focus. Use this checklist – it is the same one we share with every Travel Point group before departure.

1. Documents & Money

  • Original passport (valid 6+ months) and printed e-visa
  • Air tickets, hotel vouchers and transport details
  • Meningitis vaccination certificate
  • 4–6 spare passport-size photos
  • Photocopies of passport and visa (keep separately from originals)
  • Aadhaar / PAN copies
  • Saudi Riyals in cash plus a forex card or international debit card
  • Group leader and hotel contact card (provided by us)
Go digital too

Save scans of every document in your phone and email. If anything is lost, digital copies make replacement much faster.

2. Ihram & Prayer Essentials

  • Men: 2 sets of Ihram (thick towel-type is comfortable; carry one light set for heat)
  • Ihram belt with zip pockets for money and phone
  • Ihram sandals that keep the ankle bones and top of the foot open
  • Women: 3–4 loose abayas / modest outfits, comfortable hijabs and socks
  • Lightweight prayer mat
  • Pocket Qur’an and dua book
  • Tasbih or digital counter for Tawaf and Sa‘i rounds
  • Small drawstring bag for shoes inside the Haram

3. Clothing

  • Light cotton clothes for daytime; a light jacket or shawl for air-conditioned areas (and winter nights in Madinah)
  • Comfortable walking shoes, already broken in
  • Spare socks
  • Night wear
  • Small umbrella or cap (outside Ihram) for sun protection

4. Toiletries – Unscented!

Perfume and scented products are not allowed in the state of Ihram. Pack:

  • Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant
  • Toothbrush, miswak and toothpaste
  • Vaseline or anti-chafing cream (very useful for men in Ihram)
  • Sunscreen (unscented) and lip balm
  • Nail cutter and small scissors (for Taqsir) – pack in checked baggage
  • Wet wipes and tissues
  • Small towel

5. Medicines & Health

  • Your regular medicines for the full trip plus a few extra days, with prescriptions
  • Paracetamol, ORS sachets, antacid, anti-allergy and cold & cough tablets
  • Blister plasters and a pain-relief spray for feet and knees
  • Face masks for crowded areas
  • Glucose tablets or sweets if you are diabetic

Read our health & safety guide for more advice.

6. Gadgets & Useful Extras

  • Mobile phone with charger and power bank
  • Universal travel adapter – Saudi Arabia mainly uses UK-style 3-pin sockets
  • Small water spray bottle (great relief in the heat)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Small sling bag or backpack for daily visits to the Haram
  • Earplugs and eye mask for sleeping in shared rooms or Mina
  • Luggage locks and name tags with your phone number

What NOT to Pack

  • Too many clothes – laundry service is available
  • Expensive jewellery
  • Heavy bags – you will carry your own luggage in places
  • Scented items you might use by mistake while in Ihram
  • Prohibited items such as narcotic medicines without valid prescriptions
Baggage allowance

Allowance depends on the airline and fare – usually 30–46 kg checked baggage for Umrah and Hajj fares from India. Your ticket and our final briefing will confirm the exact limit and the Zamzam allowance.
