How to Go for Hajj from India: Hajj Committee vs Private Tour Operators

Key Takeaways

  • Indian pilgrims go for Hajj either through the Hajj Committee of India or approved private Hajj Group Organisers (HGOs).
  • Hajj seats are allotted by quota; Hajj Committee seats are selected through a draw.
  • A machine-readable passport valid well beyond the Hajj dates is essential.
  • Start preparing documents, health and fitness months in advance.

India has one of the largest Hajj quotas in the world, but demand is always higher than the number of seats. Knowing the process early helps you apply on time and choose the route that suits your family.

The Hajj Committee Process (Overview)

  1. Announcement of Hajj policy

The Ministry announces the Hajj policy and application dates – usually in the last quarter of the year before Hajj.

  2. Online application

Apply on the Hajj Committee of India website or the Hajj Suvidha app, individually or as a cover (group of family members).

  3. Selection by draw

If applications exceed the state’s quota, pilgrims are selected through a computerised draw. Some categories may receive priority as per policy.

  4. Payment & documents

Selected pilgrims pay instalments and submit their passport, medical fitness certificate and other documents within deadlines.

  5. Training & vaccination

State Hajj Committees conduct training camps and vaccination drives before departure.

  6. Flights & departure

Flight schedules are announced from embarkation points closer to the Hajj season.

Dates and rules change every year

Always check the official Hajj Committee of India announcements for the current year’s policy, deadlines and fees. Our team can guide you through the forms.

Documents You Will Need

  • Machine-readable Indian passport valid well beyond the return date (the Hajj policy specifies the cut-off date)
  • Recent passport-size photos with a white background
  • Address proof and bank details
  • Medical fitness certificate on the prescribed format
  • Vaccination certificates (meningitis and others as notified)
  • For “Ladies Without Mehram” applicants: details as required by the policy

Choosing a Private Hajj Package

  • Verify that the operator is registered and approved for the current Hajj year.
  • Ask about hotel distance from the Haram, Mina tent category and transport.
  • Check what is included: Qurbani, Ziyarat, meals and group leader support.
  • Get everything in writing and pay through traceable channels.

Prepare Early

  • Apply for or renew your passport now if needed.
  • Start a daily walking routine.
  • Learn the rituals – read our day-by-day Hajj guide.
  • Settle debts and prepare a will (wasiyyah), as recommended before Hajj.
